This is a request for Snowwie...
I have a Finnish friend at university, and would like to surprise her by using some Finnish phrases. Snowwie, are there any you can teach me?

She has a boyfriend, I don't intend to flirt with her... She will be surprised with any phrases I come out with - as far as she knows, I know Latin and Greek (and English), but not Finnish! So, any phrases that will be easy for me to pronounce, and sound polite, will be fine. Anything from 'Good afternoon' and 'How are you today?' to silly things like 'Is there a restaurant nearby that sells ice cream?' or 'Nightwish is my favourite band when I am drinking coffee on Tuesdays'. Anything at all, really, Snowwie...

Good afternoon: Hyvää iltapäivää
How are you today?: Miten voit tänään?
Is there a restaurant nearby that sells ice cream: Onko lähettyvillä ravintolaa, joka myy jäätelöä?
Nightwish is my favourite band when I am drinking coffee on Tuesdays: Nightwish on lempi bändini, kun juon kahvia tiistaina
One of the hardest things to say: Appilan pappilan papu pata kiehuu ja porisee
A rook in the hand in better than ten in the bush: pyy pivossa, parempi, kuin kymmenen pusikossa
Well hello!: No moi!
Hey I can speak finnish!: Hei osaan puhua suomea!
hmm... I'll tell you if I think of anything else hmmm... minä kerron jos keksin jotain muuta

Thank you very much! About pronunciation... are there special ways of pronouncing certain letters and sounds, or do you mostly say things as they are written down? (For example, 'women' in English is pronounced 'wimin'.)

I guess we're lucky to have someone outside the UK on these forums! ;D

We are certainly very lucky to have Snowwie around. But you are almost outside the UK yourself, Motley. You must have to catch ferries and planes quite a lot.

Not planes!
We only have two but they are for "learning how to fly ports"
Boats, yes!
Cowes is famous for shipping like "Cowes Week"
My Dad built a boat four years ago. He built it himself, and in our back garden. I sent Snowwie a picture of it...
(He named it First Episode)
And one of... * ;Dsnerk ;D* ...me! Looking rather paranoid about something...

Yes, boats... my brother-in-law is into sailing, and he's been to Cowes. I've been to the Isle of Wight myself, on a family holiday, but it was many years ago and I'm afraid I don't remember it. I'm sure the air is nice and clean, compared to cities on the mainland.

It's quite open too!
I live in the south-west area called (BRIGHSTONE)
We built our home just as we built our boat that's called HIENTON
"First Episode at Hienton," which is a single by Elton John
