It's because pop is too commercialised at the moment.

Yep, but there seems to be a backlash against it starting, what with the rise of Busted and Avril Lavigne and Evanescense.

It's partly the fault of the media too. They hype up someone, thinking everyone will like them - like Justin Timberlake for example. I'm not into him or his music and so are a lot of other people but the media don't listen. They keep bigging some singers up and dissing some others at the same time. They're pathetic!

Well, the music business has nothing to do with music.
There is a slight backlash, to a very limited extent - and with the full control of the industry. Busted, Lavigne and Evanescence may appear like a backlash but in a sense they are just as manufactured as the rest.
*goes out on a limb*
Busted is still a boy-band. The difference is that they write and play. But what exactly do they write?
Lavigne is a typical teen-angst artist, the likes of which we always get decade after decade.
Evanescence, I'm afraid I dislike most of all because they are the most contrived. Their recent #1 hit, for example, is a roll-call of teen-angst bombast. We have the oh-I'm-so-alone lyric, a bit of male spoken-word stuff and some form-less electric guitar strumming (which virtually every single modern electric band does, and I hate it).
The industry knows what appeals to those who don't see that they are having music thrust upon them that is tailor-made to appeal to them.
Happy with what you have to be happy with...
Rant over.
*runs and hides, awaiting the huge backlash*

5. Scatman John - cant remember title! 4. Coldplay - Green Eyes 3. David Gray - White Ladder 2. Coldplay - Clocks 1. David Gray - Dead in the Water
You might notice a little trend developing throughout there ;D

In no particular order:
The Red Flag The Internationale This Jesus Must Die (from Jesus Christ Superstar) Flash, Bang, Wallop (from Half a Sixpence) Almost the entire score of Les Miserables (especially Master of the House) Every Sperm is Sacred (from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life) The Bruces Philosophers Song (also by Monty Python) Brush Up Your Shakespeare (from Kiss me Kate), which has just about the best lyrics ever written (not surprising, since it's by Cole Porter)
